I’m ashamed to say that I haven’t visited or supported this particular establishment on Chanterlands Avenue up to now. Not purposely of course, it’s just that I’m a bit of a stick in the mud when eating out is concerned, I always tend to stick to the places I know and like and then you are not disappointed, that is my theory. Although finding somewhere ‘new’ is always welcome and this particular restaurant ticked all the boxes.
I’d seen and passed Cognac on the corner of Dundee Street countless times and it always looks delightful, you almost take it for granted and sometimes because it is on your doorstep you, or I, tend to dismiss it somewhat, put it down as ‘a place to visit’. A bit like the thousands of motorist’s who slowly crawl up and down the avenue twice a day looking bored to death who look into our shop window’s and sometimes do a double take but never actually venture through our doors, and if they do always they always act surprised and say ‘I didn’t know you had all this…….we always go to B @ Q…….etc, etc’
So were part of a six person birthday celebration with people who had been to Cognac before although it was two years ago. To say I was impressed is a massive understatement. The interior is warm and welcoming as are the staff and the table’s are set as good as anywhere I have been and I’ve been to a few decent places in my time. There was no mistaking that this was a French restaurant, and a very classy one at that, yes on Chanterlands Avenue, on your doorstep.
We chose from the set menu, two courses for under £15, our friends chose off the menu, and we ordered side dishes of frogs legs, believe it or not, that’s how French the atmosphere was, and in all six cases we cleared our plates because the food was delicious. We ate in one of the very best French restaurant’s in the middle of Nice not so very long ago, a place where you considered yourself lucky if they accepted your booking and you had to tip the waiter beforehand to get a decent table if you were one of the chosen few. Cognac is in a different league, there is no comparison, in the quality and presentation of the food, the excellent service and the quality of the wine, and the price must get a mention because this is and was excellent value.
We are very lucky to have such a classy establishment right on our very doorsteps on Chanterlands Avenue and it needs supporting. I cannot say enough times how good this restaurant is and we shall certainly be back. I honestly forgot we were on Chanterlands Avenue when the taxi turned up to take us home, I was half expecting to see the Eiffel Tower outside and not Dundee Fisheries.
Give it a try.
Gary.
